Month-by-Month Guide
January
January is the heart of Kabul's winter, with freezing nights and cold days that require proper winter gear. You'll likely see some snow, and the 1.4 inches of precipitation often comes as snow rather than rain. The clear, crisp days can be beautiful, but indoor heating is limited in many places.
February
Still firmly winter, though you might notice the days starting to get slightly longer. February actually brings the most precipitation after the spring months, with cold rain or snow fairly common. Nighttime temperatures remain well below freezing, so don't expect any real warmth yet.
March
Spring begins to make itself felt, with noticeably warmer days though nights stay quite cold. March is one of the wetter months, with rain showers helping to bring green to the landscape. The temperature swings between day and night can be dramatic—you'll want layers you can adjust throughout the day.
April
This is arguably one of Kabul's most pleasant months, with mild spring temperatures and the surrounding mountains at their greenest. April sees the last significant rainfall of the season, but you'll also get plenty of sunny days. The weather is generally comfortable for outdoor activities, though evenings still require a jacket.
May
Late spring brings warmer temperatures and the rainfall drops off considerably. Days are warm and pleasant, though you'll still notice cool mornings. The landscape begins to dry out as summer approaches, and you'll find this is prime time for outdoor exploration before the peak summer heat arrives.
June
Summer arrives with genuinely hot days and virtually no rainfall—June typically sees bone-dry conditions. The high elevation keeps it from being unbearable, and low humidity helps, but you'll want sun protection and plenty of water. Nights cool down enough to make sleeping comfortable, which is a relief.
July
The hottest month of the year, with temperatures pushing into the upper 80s Fahrenheit. Rain is essentially non-existent, and dust can be an issue. That said, the dry heat is more tolerable than humid heat, and mornings tend to start pleasantly before heating up by midday.
August
Similar to July, with sustained heat and minimal rainfall. The landscape looks quite brown and dusty by now after months without significant precipitation. Early mornings and evenings offer the most comfortable conditions for being outside, while midday heat encourages seeking shade or indoor activities.
September
Autumn begins with temperatures becoming noticeably more comfortable, though it's still warm during the day. The extreme heat breaks, and you'll find this is actually a pleasant time to visit. Rainfall remains minimal, and the temperature drop from summer highs makes outdoor activities enjoyable again.
October
A lovely autumn month with mild days and cool nights. The weather is generally stable with minimal rainfall and comfortable temperatures for exploring. You'll want a jacket for mornings and evenings, but afternoons can still feel quite pleasant. The landscape takes on golden autumn tones.
November
The transition toward winter becomes unmistakable, with temperatures dropping steadily and the first real cold snaps arriving. You might see some rain or even early snow. Days are getting noticeably shorter, and you'll definitely need warm layers, especially as nighttime temperatures approach freezing.
December
Winter sets in properly, with cold days and freezing nights. Snow is possible, and the city takes on a quiet, wintry feel. You'll need proper cold-weather clothing, and be prepared for limited daylight hours. Indoor spaces can be chilly as central heating isn't universal.
